I hope to learn as much as I can in being a firefighter and medical care as I can during these four weeks. I fear of struggling with anything that I come across during my internship. I really hope this will guide me in the right direction in college and really help me make decisions that will help my future. But I have not talked to my mentor much yet about what I will be doing so I have yet to learn.

Frank Parra is my lead mentor, he is a very friendly nice man who is in charge of National City Fire Department. Another one of my mentors that I work directly with is Larry Silva, one of the stations Battalion Chief. A kind man that is friendly. Larry almost became a professional soccer player before he decided to be a Firefighter.

"Dedicated to serving the community" I see this in their work everyday because I can tell how hard they work for the city of National City, not only keeping everyone safe but also just being apart of the community. For example having a haunted house during halloween and giving tours to kids from schools and teaching them about fire safety.

Its suprising how I just barely started and there has already been a lot of calls we respond to. It's only been one week and I have already seen a lot of things people needed help with from firefighters and paramedics. For example here is when a guy drove his car off the freeway and down into an embankment. We responded quickly and used bull cutters to cut the chain link fence fence down so that the tow truck would be able to pull the car though.

Brian Krepps attended Palomar college to get his A.S degree and was a paid call firefighter in del mar. And now is a captain at the fire station. being a captain consist of sitting passenger on the fire engine or truck and is a supervisor. (phone battery went down that had picture on it but getting phone back tomorrow from apple then a picture will be updated)
(did another post because picture was unable to be retrieved off phone)
Erick is a fire department paramedic who attended Granite Hills high school and is 31 years old. Erick did not attend college only took small EMT classes at grossmont jr college and does not have GE. He first started working at 19 years old as a service squad box and when he was 20-21 he attended med school. Then after getting his EMT and being a paramedic he applied for the Fire Department.

My project that I am currently working on is putting together binders for new recruitments that are coming to the station at the end of the month. From me helping put together recruiment binders they will benefit from that with all the knowledge they get out of reading it, as well as having the community benefit from the hard work firefighters put in for everyone's safety. People that work here will benefit from this work by doing good for the community and keeping others safe in the time of need.

Because of the fact that I get different mentors everyday at internship I get assigned different mini projects. For example one that I am currently working on is putting together big binders with a ton of fire fighting information for new recruits. The final product of this will be a very organized binder with specific tabs regarding fire fighting skills and tools. The skills I am developing through this is organization and more knowledge, overall academic work. The reason why I am learning organization skills is because everything has a specific tab and a specific order to go in and by doing it helps me get a feel to work on being more organized. This is something that I can turn into doing with my own school work. I also get knowledge from this because I do start to read the different kinds of skills and techniques there is to firefighting and it is something I can take with me when I pursue this career. By doing this it will benefit the organization because the new recruits will now have a very big organized binder to help them in their career as being a firefighter.

Social interactions depends on what someone or a group of people would be working on. If someone were to be working on their own project they would most likely be working by themselves at a desk in their room. But if a group of people were to all be working on something big for example, if people were working on taking everything out of the fire engine or truck giving it a deep clean social interactions would be very high. The reason why social interactions would be high is because everyone would be talking to each other and doing the job at the same time. As well as talking about what is needed to be done to clean it this results in lots of collaboration from each other. Cleaning the rigs would most likely be outside or inside the garage depending on what is being done to them. I think the social dynamic when working by yourself on your own project would be helpful since you're working alone in silence. But by the big social dynamic when cleaning is super helpful as well because when people are talking to each other they tend to enjoy the work that they are doing.

Answer b:
Internship has given me a chance to see how my future paths will look like. I no longer consider it because I know now that I want to be a firefighter. Everyday I’m there it makes me want to pursue this career even more. Because of the fact everyday could be something different it gives me a real look at what it will be like for me in the future. The joy that I experience everyday is what makes me love my internship and also know how much more I want this. It has only been two weeks but I have learned so much in them not only the work part but what I have to do to get in this career for example, all the schooling that I will need. I now know what needs to be done to have this amazing career.

I commented on Josh Floyd, Sierra Baruh and Aspen Lee
It really interested me to see what everyone is doing with their internship and to see the different types of project that people are working on. For example it is really cool how Josh Floyd is rebuilding an engine, that is something that isn't easy to do and something that I think is very cool to do because of the fact of how much knowledge he will learn from it. Some experiences that I see we have in common is when Sierra said how fast she realized how much the association she is working for was involved and that is something I noticed within minutes of being at the fire station. Also when Aspen says how Caltrans works on roads and helps out the city, Caltrans is who we work with when there's things to clean after a fire and hazmat situations so there is a connection between the two companies. Some questions that I would have if I got a chance to talk to them are wondering what it is like at the place they work at and the environment they are in.

A challenge that i've come across during internship is trying to remember a lot of things such as all the gear that is packed in the rigs and what the purpose is to all of them. But a solution that I have to this problem is I carry a pocket sized notebook and write down things that I learn and questions I have. Any fire department is surrounded with challenges especially a fire. But through training, fires just become second nature to deal with but always still a challenge. This is something I got to see, an active fire that was being put out by the fire department strategically done. They dealt with this fire by putting all the knowledge they know from training and the numerous previous fires they have already had to deal with. This is something that amazes me because of all the knowledge you have to know in order to put it out as well as doing it safety.

During the course of my internship I am going to learn everything that I need to know know academic wise in order to obtain this career. For example we are eligible to take college classes and one class that I want to try and take in high school is a EMT program at a jr college. By doing this it will get me ahead of the game and will result in me getting hired faster if I already have most of my requirements out of the way. Something else that I am taking with me back to school is getting CPR certified through this internship which will also get me a step ahead in the right direction.

Internship in fact is pretty different from school but, also similar in some ways. Responsibilities are very different than school since it is a whole different experience, such as helping people in need rather than helping yourself through school. But it is similar because I am always learning whether it is at school or at the fire station. This internship will change my future because it has influenced me to be something that I want to become, a firefighter. Something I can bring from this to school is better organization skills, this is something that I can bring to school. This is been meaningful to my education because I am learning things here that I will already know and use once I achieve my career and I am learning what I have to in school so that I may earn this job in my future.

Internship has been going great and everyday it gets better. My projects that I have been working on have been really fun. They went from an idea to a real project from basic brainstorming on what I can complete during my time there. I’ve been working on a few different mini projects throughout this course because of a different mentor situation but, by hard work on mini projects they finally become a final product, some still in the making. One of my projects that I had been assigned to is memorizing everything that is on the fire engine which I am still working on. I am working on this by taking an inventory of everything that is on the apparatus and making my own notes to remember. I've learned so much here especially through project work for example another project that I have talked about in other posts is binders that I am putting together, these binders are filled with tons of firefighter information. While I put them together I like to read about the different kinds of tools, supplies and strategies there is to being a fireman. These binders are like the firefighter handbook. I've achieved so much learning through this by asking questions and trying to understand how things work when they are being examples to me like a special tool for example or a certain way of rescue. Some challenges that I’ve faced is just lack of knowledge since there is so much to learn but my solution to that is to ask more questions and learn everything I need to know so that I may achieve this career.

Communication plays a huge role in the fire department. We always have to be communication with one another at all times. For example on a medical aid call, we all have to know what the situation is, what we are doing, and what is going to happen. Another example is when we are on a call and in contact with a radio nurse at a hospital, we have to communicate very well and paint them the picture over the radio of the situation we are in and listen to further instructions that rely on what you have just told them. Communication is key in the fire department. The only way I can learn at the fire department is by communication. I have to be asking questions, being a good listener and be proactive.

- I will be using flash cards for my presentation. I will be thinking about questions so that if they are asked I will be prepared. Everyday I appreciate the firefighters more and more because of how hard they work.
- What did you learn about the importance of (the role of) communication and self advocacy during your internship (with your mentor? Among colleagues?)
-
How did communication and/or collaboration at work influence your understanding of professional working environments?
- As I had discussed in my blog posts communication is key in the fire department we all have to be in the know and understand the situation we are in because it is important that we all know what is currently happening. This helps me understand in professional work environments because being verbal with one another is very helpful and can be critical.
- My day to day responsibilities consist of being on the engine and responding to 911 calls. I make meaningfull contribution by trying my hardest in anything I can do during my time here.

The characteristics in the people that surround me that I want to develop is, all the knowledge they know I want to learn so badly. Because by learning everything it will make my career as a firefighter even better by knowing it all through this experience first hand. My view of life changed beyond high school because I got a glimpse of what the future is going to look like for me. When I started I thought about being a fireman but now I most definitely want to be a firemen as soon as I can. This is something that I will achieve when I am older.

I am most thankful for my main mentor Frank Parra and, the people that help me get the real experience throughout this process. For example the fire fighting training we get to do and the real life 911 calls we respond to. Some new appreciations are really just everyone that is here to help me out throughout this entire process and everyone who makes it beneficial to me.

My internship has inspired me to think about college by what needs to be done in order to obtain this career. I now know some options of colleges that I can go to that wil help me out in the process of becoming a fireman. For example either Mirimar or Palomar college that has either most if not everything I need for this career. Some things I would have to study is fire science and getting my EMT and paramedic.
2/1/17
I will be continuing internship beyond HTHI by keeping in contact with mentors and colleagues that were there to help me throughout this process. Also coming back to the fire station when I am not in school to keep gaining knowledge everyday I am there. These connections will help me move on with life in order to get my EMT and paramedic.
2/2/17
Something that went well during my internship mini projects were it was something I learned a lot from and gained skills from that will help me in the future. Something that I should have done differently was to keep asking more questions during project work. And something that stands out to me is how much knowledge I gained that will help me in the future of becoming a firefighter.
