Mentor Interview Questions
Internship Project Discussion & Brainstorm: All interns develop a substantial project(s) with the mentor that contributes to the organization.
What projects do employees do for the company?
Each captain has a project ranging from equipment maintenance to equipment purchasing, training projects (training officers). Fire fighters in charge of order and supplies. Engineers in charge of what is on apparatus and making sure that everything is operational. All three battalion chiefs oversee all of the projects. Captains are in charge of EMS everything having to do with Paramedics and EMT's training and equipment that go along with it. Captains also have projects for teaching everyone how to drive as well as keeping track of driving records. Captains work on rescue and extrication with keeping everyone up to date on rescue knowledge. Engineers are in charge of hazmat making sure everyone receives training on hazmat. Battalions always oversee everything. Captains and engineers in charge of radios which always have to be programmed and maintained as well as pagers that are carried around. All done by firefighters, engineers, captains and chief battalion.
Of all of these project ideas, which seem most appealing and appropriate and why?
All projects show ownership in the department and gives the employee a chance to have their ideas imputed. So individuals seek to do a good job. As people ask for projects in the fire department. Because people have passion for certain things such as people who are really good with electronics and want to work on radios rather than someone who has a passion for rescue and like to learn knots and ropes in a rescue situation. Depending on your passion it would be up to the individual to choose what is most appealing to them. But in my opinion the most appealing is fire engines and how everything works on them with hoses as well as different kinds of rescue equipment there is to work with.
How could this project idea(s) be authentic, rigorous, and connected to the company’s purpose and/or mission?
Given the fact of how important each project is in the department it all connects to each other because everything at the fire station serves a purpose. All projects and equipment is needed in the department because without it, it would be nothing and pointless. The mission is to keep everyone safe and that is not possible without the right gear.
What type of support and skills will be required to ensure the project(s) is successful? Who might be able to help support you in completing the project?
Basic communication skills and comprehension skills are an advocate in any line of work. But support would be most helpful through your supervisor or supervisors.
How might you present this project as part of the Internship Presentation of Learning?
By giving a demonstration of how things work at the fire station and teaching them about information about fire safety.
